Gallaher family papers, 1800-1924.

Chiefly family correspondence of several generations of the Gallaher family of Charles Town, W. Va., owners of the Virginia Free Press, along with some subscription, circulation, and advertisement records for the newspaper. Letters of the related Wilson family include some from Alpheus Waters Wilson, a Methodist bishop in Baltimore, and Augusta Virginia Wilson, a Methodist missionary on the Creek Reservation in Oklahoma (1887-1890) and at Chihuahua and Guadalajara, Mexico (1890-1898). One letter mentions two African-Americans who were boxed up alive and sent to Philadelphia.

Alpheus Waters Wilson, Methodist bishop and author, was born 5 February 1834, in Baltimore, Maryland, and died there 21 November 1916. He was made secretary of the board of missions (1878); made bishop (1882); toured missions in East Asia (1886; 1890-1891; 1898-1900; 1907; Japan, Korea, China) and Brazil (1892-1903); and wrote many articles and books including MISSIONS and WITNESS TO CHRIST, a collection of lectures delivered at Vanderbilt University.
